Starrcade, the granddaddy of all PPVs, returns to WWE

The tradition returns!

The WWE announced today that Starrcade will return after a 17-year absence. The event will appropriately be held in Greensboro, NC, with a scheduled main event of Shinsuke Nakamura challenging Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship in a steel cage match.

Charlotte Flair will also meet Natayla for the WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship in another cage match. Former NWA World Tag Team Champions the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express and former NWA World Champion Ricky Steamboat are also scheduled to appear.

The first Starrcade took place in Greensboro, North Carolina on November 24, 1983, when Ric Flair won his second NWA World Title from Harley Race, and Greg Valentine brawled with Roddy Piper in a brutal Dog Collar Chain Match. Over the years, Starrcade was an NWA (and later WCW) tradition. Originally taking place on Thanksgiving, Vince McMahon’s WWF essentially chased the NWA from the holiday with the Survivor Series, beginning in 1987.

Starrcade saw many memorable moments, including Magnum T.A. vs. Tully Blanchard in an I Quit Match at Starrcade 1985, the “Night of the Skywalkers” scaffold match between the Road Warriors and the Midnight Express in 1986, and Kevin Nash ending Goldberg’s streak in dubious fashion at Starrcade 1998.

At WCW’s final Starrcade event in the year 2000, in Washington, D.C., Scott Steiner defeated Sid Vicious to retain the WCW World Heavyweight Title. This will be the first time WWE has ever promoted an event named “Starrcade.”
