Is It Good? My Little Pony Micro-Series #6: Applejack Review

You know what? I’m tired of all these dark, gritty, heavy, and serious comics. We need more upbeat, fun, and bright stories every once in a while. As such, it’s time for some ponies! Applejack to be more specific. Is it good?

Things are hectic at Sweet Apple Acres as the Apple family gets food prepared for all of Ponyville for Hearth’s Warming Eve. Things only get more hectic and crazy when their apple harvest is threaten by a mythical creature known as the Sass Squash, who steals their apples and leaves behind squashes (get it?). Not wanting the holidays ruined for everyone, Applejack decides to capture the beast herself, though that proves to be much more difficult than expected.

Like the rest of the Micro-Series issues, this is a simple done in one little tale and it works quite well. It feels like the show with how everything is setup, flows from point to point, how the moral is presented and hinted at throughout the issue, and the how the humor is interjected. Everything feels just right and is great for fans of the show. The only problems I find with the story is a reveal later on in the issue that ultimately raised a lot of questions and the moral itself has been done before with the character (twice in fact). Sure, there is a spin on it that works well, but it’s something you think Applejack would have figured out by now, even if her intentions are noble.

The art is very good, using very a similar style to the main book. It’s very bright and colorful, matching the tone of the series and rest of the comics very well. The expressions on the characters is what makes this a real treat to look at though, with how well the artist captures their emotions and brings them to life on the page. There are a couple of good chuckles and smiles just from the facial expressions alone.

  • Feels perfectly close to an episode.
  • The art fits in quite well with the series.
  • A reveal that might leave the reader confused.
  • This moral, while good, has been done twice before.

Is It Good?

Definitely. The comic captures the spirit, tone, emotion, and humor of the series quite well to the point where I think the script for the issue can easily be translated to the TV show. With the exception of two hiccups in the story, this is a must read for fans.
