Is It Good? Batman #31 Review

We are getting closer and closer to end of our time with Zero Year. Things only look like they’ll be getting more and more exciting and action packed: Batman #31 — is it good?

Teaming up with Lucius Fox, Batman and Jim Gordon have a plan to find The Riddler; they know he’s somewhere inside of Gotham, but where exactly that is remains a mystery. With a special little device hooked up to the right place on the screen Riddler uses to present his daily quizzes the trio has a chance to track him down. Of course, for the device to work, they’ll need time and a distraction. Good thing they have a person for that.

Jackals? Bah, you gentlemen severely underestimate me.

Definitely a step up from the previous issue, but still biding a bit of time before the big climax, Batman #31 is a solid issue overall. Like the previous one, this is a very dialogue heavy comic and people do talk and talk for long stretches. Luckily, since it is consistent throughout, it’s a bit engrossing at points (highlights go to the conservation between Batman and the Riddler), and it feels a bit more natural in some parts; the story never grinds to a halt and the book remains a solid read throughout.

Besides the noticeable dialogue, the rest of the writing is solid throughout. The pacing is good, slow in the more quiet and thoughtful moments and fast in the more intense scenes. The characters are portrayed well and feel natural to their roles, with some decent characterization as well. The only thing that seems a bit iffy is with Bruce in a flashback scene which has a rather questionable ending. I understand why he was bothered and uncomfortable, but his reaction seems a bit… too asshole-ish if you ask me.

Last issue, there was a big action scene that seemed to be a very big stretch, but thankfully there’s nothing like that this time around. Sure, there was a moment or two that made me scratch my head but that’s pretty much it. It’s a good read overall and is getting me more and more anxious to see how it all ends.

It is a plot point that will be charging your way!

The artwork by Capullo is great as always, but I suspect that everyone already knew that going into the book. The line work, inking, coloring, structure, such and such are also fantastic as usual. I will say the artwork doesn’t really get to show anything too impressive or amazing until the second half of the book when Batman challenges the Riddler, but that’s just how it goes sometimes. Spectacular art as usual and that’s all there is to it.

Is It Good?

Batman #31 is another solid issue of the series as it slowly approaches the finale of Zero Year. There’s just not much else to say other than if you have been enjoying the comic up to now, there’s no reason not to keep going, especially with this issue.
