Is It Good? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time #1

Writer Paul Allor and artist Ross Campbell bring us a familiar sounding story (to children of the 90’s, anyway) with a brand new twist. Is it good?

Unfortunately, the issue has to start off with an explanation: The lead in to the issue is apparently the yet to be published TMNT 2014 Annual. But who cares? We’ve got dinosaurs to read about, here!

The issue then begins by dropping us right into the action. The turtles are caught in a stampede of prehistoric creatures and they’re just as confused as the reader. Before they have time to figure out what’s going on, two Utrom’s appear and capture Raphael.

The rest of the ninja turtles are unable to rescue him on account of a giant predator on their tale (which leads to a fairly humorous moment). After escaping a digestive fate, Renet (the character who we were supposed to meet in the TMNT annual) shows up and disappears out of nowhere.

Meanwhile, Raph makes friends with an adorable baby Triceratops which he nicknames Pepperoni. Before they can attempt a daring escape together, however, Mikey swoops in on a commandeered flying lizard, raining down rocks and barbs on his brother’s Utrom captors.

The rescue goes a bit too easily due to the fact that their opponents were scientists. When the warrior Utroms show up, things get a bit more interesting…and surprisingly hilarious.

The issue ends with the Turtles being transported to another unknown era, the Utroms making an important decision that affects their entire future (as we’ve seen it portrayed), and poor little Pepperoni is left to wonder what happened to his new friends.

Is it Good?

The writing and art on this issue both started slowly and improved immensely as the story went along. Allor expertly handles the humorous moments while Campbell does a great job showing the facial expressions and reactions needed for a story with so many humorous elements.

I must admit to enjoying this one much more on the second read through. After Allor’s prior (and masterful) work on Utrom Empire, I was expecting a much darker and serious tone. The comical tone of this one initially caught me off guard, but it ends up being highly entertaining while also tying in nicely to the TMNT mythos.

Funny, but still full of brutal class

Campbell’s art really starts settling into its usual level of quality right when the issue ends, but it’s still very good overall. Combined with Allor’s writing, it makes for a solid opening to a miniseries that might not have the depth and impact of Utrom Empire, but should still be incredibly entertaining.
