Is It Good? My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #20 Review

It’s time to finish up the latest arc of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic as our equestrian heroines are about to face down the evil alternate Earth princesses. Do they have what it is takes? Will we see more alternate universe characters? Is it good?

Is It Good? My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #20 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

The Mane 6 and King Sombra have a plan to finally put down the evil Princess Celestia and Luna for good that will hopefully set things straight. However, the two have already gotten wind of this plan and have their own plan to force them into revealing how to get into the regular universe. Speaking of which, reality and dimension planes that separate both worlds are starting to crack and crumble…

That is totally the face of someone you can trust.

And so ends this story arc and admittedly, it’s pretty good but with a few problems. The story had a good ending that wrapped up everything pretty well and even leaves a tiny door open in case the writers want to follow up on this somewhere down the line. There are a lot of good moments here, and even touching ones to certain degree that work reasonably well. However, there were some story bits that felt… convenient and stretching it more than usual or even bits that don’t feel explained well. For instance, both worlds are sort of colliding and coming together and that explains the Mane 6 being there and impacting things. Okay, that’s fine. However, how the barrier between the worlds eventually shatters is because evil Celestia attacks evil Luna. I have no clue how exactly that works since they are not a part of the regular world like the main cast is.

The rest of the writing is solid as usual. The characters all feel accurate, the villains are enjoyable and amusing, the dialogue and narration are good, the pacing is decent if a bit rushed towards the end, and the humor is great like always. There is a bit of wasted potential here, since this whole alternate universe has plenty of potential to explore and see other characters outside of the minor hints we got of them. Also, outside of a decent joke at the end, we didn’t even get to see the alternate versions of the heroes. It doesn’t really hurt the comic badly, but it makes you wish there was more.

Sometimes, it’s best not to ask how Pinkie gets into those crazy situations.

The artwork is a treat. The characters look decent, but have a great, wide variety in expression and emotion, really adding more to the comedy. The layouts look good overall, and there’s even a bit of a nod in a way to Crisis on Infinite Earths/Infinite Crisis here. The backgrounds and colors are lively, there’s some great looking imagery here, and it all comes together to be one of the best looking issues of the series to date. Great stuff for fans of the series.

Is It Good?

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #20 is a solid finish for this big arc, with lots of great moments and humor to be found. The story is a bit iffy in parts and there’s a tad of wasted potential here, but the comic is definitely enjoyable overall and worth your time if you are a fan of the show.
