Is It Good? Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #14 Review

Even though no one honestly thought Godzilla was dead, he’s back to kicking names and taking ass. Is it good?

Although it was pretty clear Anguirus got the crap beaten out of him in the last issue, this one opens with five more pages of the poor guy getting slapped around by Mechagodzilla. We then cut to the shady business man using some shady tactics to coerce the world’s leaders into purchasing his deadly new product.

“I learned this little trick from Tony Robbins!”

Lucy and her team rush to save him only to discover that he’s still alive… and still a monster.

Meanwhile, Woods is trying to have a nice lunch with his adopted daughter Allie when Godzilla fortuitously shows up in the same city. That’s when the shady business man reveals his (awesome looking) plan along with his true form.

Is It Good?

Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first.

Maybe I just don’t get it, but Lucy and her crew don’t really seem to care that much about humans compared to the monsters (as evidenced by her flippantly talking about Anguirus “rumbling through town.”). Also, when the villain talks about monsters no longer destroying cities, it’s framed as some sort of sinister motivation. I know kaiju are cool and all, but if they really were destroying our homes and killing countless people, stopping them wouldn’t seem like a sinister motivation at all.

We’re also once again starting to dive into more tangled mythology/continuity which detracts from the main story. Fortunately, it wasn’t enough to derail it completely. Matt Frank’s artwork is out of this world, particularly on the opening fight scene.

Chris Mowry also still manages to keep the plot coherent while providing one heck of a cliffhanger. I’d keep this one in the ‘good’ category… but not by much.
