After the huge, game-changer that was the Chicken Tenders arc, Chew has entered its next storyline called “Blood Puddin’”.
Last issue was pretty good, but the sort of good you come to expect from Chew and not much to talk about overall. However, let’s take a look at this new issue and see what is going on. Is it good?
Chew #47 (Image Comics)
Lots of things are still going down for many of the characters: Colby is afraid for his life that the FDA will discovered what he did to poor old Poyo. Tony is still hanging on and constantly checking on the patients in the hospital to see if anything has changed (some of the patients are actually starting to wake up). D-Bear is also still an FDA agent and new partner for Tony. What happens now for this cast?
The last issue of Chew was pretty much setting up the status quo/where everyone was at after the end of the last arc. Not much really progressed, but it was still a good issue. This outing feels similar, though it is more of a simple story with Tony and D-Bear investigating a new case and checking in on a couple of plot points and characters. It’s a fun time like usual, but the middle just feels slow. However, things do change around at the ending, which is certainly surprising and something I was not expecting. It’s nowhere as shocking as what we have been seeing with the book recently, but if you were starting to relax a little too much, this moment will put you on edge and desperately waiting for the next issue.
Between you and me, I think you should move the body.
John Layman’s writing on Chew remains much the same as usual. And that’s a good thing. The characterization is solid, the pacing and story structure are decent, there’s no awkward transitions between scenes, the dialogue is funny and engaging, and the humor still provides plenty of chuckles and laughs. One of the smaller things I liked was bringing back the Bon Vivants (who you might remember from way back at the beginning of the series), if only for a little bit. It’s nothing huge and doesn’t affect the plot, but it’s always nice to see when a writer brings back an old thing from the past and works it into the story as a fun little nod. Honestly, there’s just not much beyond that to say about the writing.
The same goes with the artwork by Rob Guillory. It looks great as always and hasn’t really slipped up at all. The characters are drawn well, the layouts and coloring are all very good, the small and subtle jokes (foreground or in the background) are great and still provide some good laughs, and there are some striking images in the book. Its great work as usual, with no slip-ups anywhere.
Is It Good?
Chew #47 is another fine issue of the series, ending off on a great cliffhanger that has me excited for seeing more. Everything you’ve come to expect from the series is still here in terms of quality, so dive in.
