The grand finale of IDW’s continuation of the X-Files franchise is here. Is it good?
The X-Files: Season 10 #25 (IDW Publishing)
The issue opens with Gibson Praise leading Scully on very uncomfortable/terrifying reunion tour.
Meanwhile, Mulder isn’t having a lot of fun or luck, either…until he just happens to be dumped in a place with internet access! Okay, now to Joe Harris’ credit, this little plot convenience isn’t as dumb as it sounds. In fact, it ends up leading to something really bad happening to a few of the main characters in the U.S.
After that, the issue becomes a web of decisions that must be made by everyone. Some are good, some are heartbreaking, and one leads us to an ending that it creepy as all get out.
Is It Good?
Soooo…I’m a little torn on this issue. On one hand, I really wanted there to be more resolution to the Gibson Praise storyline, especially with how wonderfully Harris set it up. On the other hand, the ending helped make up for its lack of closure with some chilling possibilities for the future.
Sometimes I like to put a mirror up to the tank and watch him get angry at his reflection.
We also got some great character moments, particularly from the Lone Gunmen and Skinner (never will a gold watch look more badass). I guess my main complaint with this otherwise enjoyable book was that it felt like a whole lot of setup for what was supposed to be a season finale. I really should be used to that as a longtime X-Files fan, but c’mon…
I will say, however, that all setup we got did make me excited for Season 11. Matthew Dow Smith also does a great job with the art, particularly on a touching and beautiful splash page of Mulder and Scully. I know we’re all pumped about X-Files returning to television this fall, but we should be equally excited about IDW continuing to publish such an enjoyable title.
