The Plot

  • The issue opens with a flashback to the Peacock clan’s early days. Ever wonder how their father died? Now you get to know.
  • PIGS!!!
  • Mulder continues his horrifying/awkward reunion with Edmund, Mrs. Peacock, and his new siblings/children. Then he sees something that relates to something Gibson said to him (via telepathy) that ends up with him out in a cornfield doing something that ends with him in a very compromised position. (Not like that, ya perv).
  • Meanwhile, Gibson is being an obnoxious, vague asshole to both Mulder and Scully. He also might finally be giving Scully some useful information, though (when he’s not messing with her home media devices).

Is It Good?

Erm…I’m not really sure what to say.

While last issue did a good job setting the table for the Peacock clan’s return, this one left me a bit baffled. For starters, I still have no idea what Mulder is supposed to be doing with that salvaged device. I also am even more confused about Gibson’s power level/end game, and not in a good way. If he’s really so omnipotent now, how could he not see the danger Mulder was being put in.

And then there’s the scene with Scully, which felt like an excuse to have her grab hold of the main plot thread more than anything else.

I may be of the few people who doesn’t consider Home a top ten X-Files episode, but I still think it’s fertile ground for a chilling story—and I still trust Harris to pull it off. He’s proven me wrong plenty of times before when I questioned his middle-chapter narratives. And when you’ve got Matthew Dow Smith drawing the inbred family so well, it pretty much can’t be bad.

But as of right now, the narrative direction feels more uneven than the Peacock’s genetic code.
