All-New Wolverine #1 Review

So… Wolverine is still dead and isn’t coming back for quite some time if I had to guess. However, Marvel has decided to put someone else in the role for the time being: Laura Kinney, aka X-23. With Tom Taylor writing, is this a change for the better? Is it good?

The Lowdown

Somewhere in Paris, Laura Kinney is protecting a man from an assassination attempt. Who tried to kill him and why is unknown but Laura has a job to do…. Especially as the brand new Wolverine!

The Yays

As first issues go, this comic does a great job of introducing Laura Kinney for new readers. I’m personally not too familiar with her past to know if she is acting in character, but she is introduced very well here. Her backstory is introduced within a flashback/near-death experience that doesn’t really break up the flow of the story and doesn’t go on for too long either. You get to see her personality at play with how far she goes to protect people, stop the villain, and how she interacts with Angel, depicting her as a courageous and caring individual. You also get to see her powers and abilities in full detail as well, allowing a reader to get a full picture on what kind of person she is. This is easily the one of the better introductions to a lead character in these new Marvel books we’ve gotten so far.

The writing is pretty good as well. The book is reasonably paced, and the dialogue and narration are fine and nothing sounded all that awkward or too unnatural. The only other recognizable character in the comic was, I believe, the young time-traveling Angel and he seemed characterized well (didn’t seem too different from his appearance in Bendis’ X-Men series). The ending is predictable, but provides a decent hook for where this series can go. Overall, the comic told a complete story in one issue, unlike a lot of these other Marvel series currently being released, and that’s a plus.

I’ll beat the crap out of you and then you’ll have no choice but to listen to me!

The artwork is split between David Lopez and David Navarrot and to the credit of these artists, it never felt noticeable if and when there was changes between their work. The characters and their expressions are drawn well, the action was fluid and exciting to look at, layouts were easy to read, and most of the backgrounds were actually filled in most of the time. Both Davids’ artwork have a sort of standard, superhero look and style to them, but their work still gets the job done regardless and looks good.

The Nays

There is little to no context for what is going on in this comic. Who is this person Laura saved? Why was he being targeted to be killed? How did Laura know about this assassination? When exactly did she take on the role of Wolverine? Why is Laura not surprised about the identity of the assassination? And so on and so forth. This comic just really drops us into the middle of a story already in progress and it’s a bit frustrating not knowing what is happening. Even beyond that problem, as decently written as the issue is, it’s a fairly standard first issue for a solo character series. While it does most everything right, it also doesn’t really do anything new or hit you with that big of a surprise to really get you excited about seeing more of the series. Hopefully Tom Taylor cranks up the excitement and intrigue in the next issue.

Is It Good?

All-New Wolverine #1 is a good first issue to this new series. It acts as a great introduction to Laura Kinney as a character, giving new and old readers everything they need to know about her to understand what she is all about. The issue also sports some good writing and artwork, but lacks explanation or context for anything that is happening in the book. So in the end, if you are a fan of the character or are looking for a decent superhero comic, this may be the series for you.
