Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein: Storm Surge #2 Review

Why do horror comics premiere in October? By the time we’ve reached issue #2, we’re planning our Thanksgiving and Christmas shopping! That makes it even harder for a comic book to sustain the scares. So is it good?

Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein: Storm Surge #2 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Writers Dean Koontz and Chuck Dixon have themselves quite the series on their hands here, but the general premise is easy enough to slip into: one of Dr. Frankenstein’s creations is a somewhat normal looking woman named Erika who found a mirror in the last issue that the great doctor uses to transport to other dimensions. Now that’s a twist on the doctor. Oh, and he’s a complete madman and the villain of this story. Last issue Erika interacted with a disembodied head and stepped into the mirror. This issue reveals where she ends up.

Why does this comic book matter?

I’m all for new takes on old stories and this is gearing up to be a fascinating new take. Erika has a dilemma of sorts as she’s beaten by the doctor, which represents domestic abuse. Meanwhile, Dr. Frankenstein has more power than ever. This issue reveals Erika has discovered an America that’s being hit by a Hurricane named Shelley, the name of the writer of the original story!

Can they really eat dead flesh though?

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Dixon and Kootnz do a great job setting up Frankenstein and his madness. You see it not only with the beasts working for him but how big his plan appears to be. He also treats the somewhat nice head very poorly so by the end of the issue it’s going to be obvious he’s a great bad guy.

I also love that this dimension appears to have a Katrina-level storm on their hands and it’s called Shelley. How awesome is that? There’s a mix of real history, Shelley allusions and a great big plan Frankenstein is cooking up that’s most assuredly going to pay off next issue.

The art by Andres Ponce works well too that has a cinematic style which behooves the dramatic nature of this thriller type story. Contrary to the intro of this review, this is more of an action story than a horror story. The first story felt like a horror story due to Erika creeping in the scary house of Dr. Frankenstein, but in this issue it’s much more about heroes fighting against a madman.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Erika disappears from this issue, especially when you consider how prominent she was last issue. This could partly be due to the story being written more for the collection than a single issue read kind of deal. Reading issues back to back may solve it, but if you pick this issue up expect little to no Erika.

There are also some new characters here that aren’t introduced very well. I found it hard to care about them as their purpose isn’t very strong. I suspect they are part of some previous work in this series, but they’re sort of dropped in this issue as if we should know who they are.

Dick move Frankenstein!

Is It Good?

Dr. Frankenstein has never been this scary with a plan that’s so big you’re not going to want to drop this comic.
