Eden’s Fall #2 Review

After an explosive opening chapter, the massive crossover event between Top Cow’s The Tithe, Think Tank, and (my personal favorite) Postal returns this week for its second issue.

Is it good?

Observations

  • Once again, the recap page/character primer is greatly appreciated (DC Comics, please take note).
  • Dang. Samantha doesn’t mess around.
  • …and neither does Mayor Shiffron.
  • Any chance we could get a spinoff series that’s just Shiffron telling medieval fantasy tales?
  • edens-fall-2-medieval

  • Hard to watch Loren get dressed down like that, but you still gotta love the shirt.
  • I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again—Mayor Shiffron is a total badass.
  • Thorton has done some truly awful things, but him talking to Mark like that set me off a lot more than I expected.
  • Oh, this is not going well…
  • Holy crap.
  • HOLY $#&%!

Is It Good?

Now we’re cooking with gas.

First of all, hats off to the creative team for making me care so much about a character who I only know from this series. In fact, every character I’m not familiar with feels surprisingly well established considering how little time we’ve spent with them.

I was a bit disappointed at Loren’s lack of involvement in this issue, but Hill and Hawkins more than make up for that with an extra strong dose of Laura Shiffon. Watching her interrogate and manipulate a person is a thing of beauty.

Artist Atilio Rojo also deserves a lot of credit for how great this issue is. Don’t let how ‘pretty’ his artwork is fool you. When it’s time for the blood and gore, the dude brings it. Hard. Add in Hawkins/Hill’s decision to put the reader’s POV on the receiving end of a lethal ass kicking, and it’s just the kick that Eden’s Fall needed to truly feel like an event.

Could the major death we see be a trick? Maybe. That seed was definitely planted. But even if it is, the scene that gets us there is so brutal and effective that you can’t help but be fully hooked in by it. And considering the fallout its about to cause, I’d say things are about to get a lot worse for the characters—and even better for the readers.
