Zula Hendricks plan to deny the Colonial Marines a xenomorph specimen (thereby denying it to the Weyland-Yutani Corporation) has hit a bit of a snag. She and Davis have also made a new friend…maybe. This issue explores that a bit.

Observations
- Tristan Jones drawing a brutal engagement between xenomorphs and colonial marines is always a good thing…
- It’s even better when Zula Hendricks is narrating truth bombs over it.
- Ah man, I was just starting to (kind of) like her.
- Dang. Maybe she’s tougher/more awesome than I thought.
- Get some, Davis!
- So THAT’S why Hendricks was firing those missiles in the last issue.
Is It Good?
First off, I take back what I said to writer Brian Wood about hating flash forward at the start of a story…mostly. I’m still not a big fan of the narrative confusion it can cause, but I really like the way Wood makes the ending to this issue pay off what we saw at the start of the last one.
I also love the way he writes Hendricks and her reaction to what’s happening. She clearly feels all types of awful about firing on fellow soldiers, but she’s also got an unshakable grasp on the bigger picture.
Davis continues to be a fascinating study in android humanity, while Hollis proved herself to be both a worthy addition to the main cast and the crux of a potentially terrifying new plot thread.
In addition to all that good stuff, we get Tristan Jones drawing some breathtaking xenomorph action sequences. He even gives the facehuggers a well-deserved moment in the spotlight. But perhaps the best part of his work is how he portrays what a fight with these creatures can do to a human. The movies weren’t even this gruesome.
If you’re looking for a good Alien fix while we wait for the Prometheus movies to step aside (and let Neill Blomkamp take over the franchise), then Aliens: Defiance is just what the medical android ordered.
