Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #9 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about? The full summary reads:

While Tommy and Jason face off against Black Dragon on the Moon, the rest of the Rangers seek a means to jump-start their powers and save their Zords from his influence! With Billy’s life on the line, will the Rangers overcome their greatest challenge or find defeat in the claws of this familiar foe.

Why does this book matter?

Tommy, the Green Ranger, is the main character in this one, so if you own a Dragon Dagger or had an affinity for the character like most of us you gotta read this. It’s also a story with the stakes very high and a mysterious new villain taking the Rangers out with ease. That’s exciting!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #9 Review
Boss.

This issue is well paced with a few twists, surprises, and good teamwork from the Rangers. The cover says it all as far as an interesting new twist, as Tommy has given his power over to the team. Much of this issue is focused on Tommy and Billy doing what they can to stop the new enemy and thwart Rita who called this bastard to our world.

Kyle Higgins writes good dialogue as well, effectively showing us how Billy is smart enough to talk himself out of a situation. Essentially the main meat of the issue involves the characters using their noggins to find a weakness of the enemy which is fun to read, though there is some Zord action in there too. The ending is pretty wicked and it’ll have folks talking and everything naturally leads to its reveal.

The art by Hendry Prasetya continues to have a darker tone that makes the story feel more realistic and high stakes. The Dragonzord takes a few massive punches that are bone-crunching hard and the Rangers themselves, in all their green glory, look top notch. You won’t question the validity of the Power Rangers in large part because of the art.

It can’t be perfect can it?

I’m still scratching my head in regards to the backups in this series, which have been way too kid friendly for their own good. This iteration isn’t so bad in comparison to previous ones, but it still doesn’t jive with the more moody and adult main story.

More Green Rangers more fun!

Is It Good?

Power Rangers #9 is a well paced and smartly written issue that keeps your interest to the very end. On top of that, it all culminates to a cliffhanger that’ll get you talking.
