Rocket Raccoon #1 Review

With the Guardians no longer protecting the Galaxy, Rocket is left to fend for himself on Earth. Naturally he’s so happy about it–yeah right. Earth sucks. Matthew Rosenburg and Jorge Coelho weave the tale of our once hero and how he’s trying to make it on a planet that obviously doesn’t want him there. Things are looking bleak. Even when there’s a ray of hope it turns to pile of–well, you know.

Rocket Raccoon #1 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

This is a full Rocket tale. You will not find much reference to the Guardians and he’s not looking to find any partners. He’s stranded so we’re watching what unfolds as he tries to find a way of the planet. People are just jerks, but I mean I don’t know what I would do if I saw a genetically modified raccoon, so there’s that.

The issue reads like a sarcastic dream. There are a few conversations where I questioned the use of it but then just assumed it was there. It made the read much more entertaining. You might find a little bit of his hero tendencies throughout the issue but it’s not the predominant theme. Within the first few pages he’s already a wanted creature. The Avengers name shows up a few times and we get to see one of New York’s super residents for a bit. The visuals are pretty great–the style is rough but works really well since we’re meant to see what a terrible time he’s having while stranded.

There are a few scenes taking place and some go a little faster than others. There isn’t any downtime in the story, which is good, but there are a few situations I was looking for a little more information. The opening page is amazing but then we get a few pages that are way too full. Panels for days. If they separated into another page or put a few more panels together the organization might have worked a bit better.

This is definitely a series to keep an eye on in the future. If you’re not into the feel-good stories this is totally for you.
