Observations

  • Glad to see that Ben Reilly can still maintain his humor while destroying the human race.
  • Leaving a grieving rhino alone is always a safe bet.
  • Even when she’s fighting for her life, Ana Maria still doesn’t mess around.
  • Gwen’s not looking too good right now, but seeing her and Spidey work together like this is still a beautiful thing.
  • You know things are bad when Spider-Man and Dock Ock are on the same side.
  • Poor Jonah :(
  • “MELT WITH ME!”
  • We’re going to need a lot of dustpans.
  • Oh, c’mon…

The Verdict

As good as this event has been, Clone Conspiracy #5 doesn’t quite stick the landing. Unlike the previous issues, this one felt choppy and a bit rushed…which is weird since we’re getting an Omega issue epilogue next month.

Also, there is a GIANT copout that helps the series tie up a few of its loose ends. I understand why it was done (especially since one of those “loose ends” currently has his own series), but it still felt kind of cheap.

All that being said, however, Clone Conspiracy #5 still has more than enough good moments to make it enjoyable, especially when taken as a part of the whole series. The best is probably Gwen Stacy (the one who was resurrected) teaming up with Spider-Man to help take down the Jackal. Dan Slott really did a fantastic job reestablishing her in a new time and for a new audience.

While Gwen clearly steals the show, there are plenty of other great character moments throughout the issue. Artist Jimmy Cheung also turns in what might be his best pencils of the whole series, thanks in no small part to a stunning two-page spread and some of the most jam-packed action sequences you could hope for.

The Clone Conspiracy doesn’t quite match the greatness of Spider-Verse, but it’s still one of the best event series we’ve had in the last decade—and an absolute must-read if you’re any type of Spider-Man fan.
