Head Lopper #5 Review

Head Lopper: A surprise gem I reviewed last year, that I sat down, devoured, and then special ordered the print issue to put on my shelf.

I also got the chance to interview Andrew MacLean – the creator – last week, just before issue #5 released. Let’s see if it holds up to the gold standard of the first collection.

Andrew’s art brings me to a 2000 A.D./Heavy Metal/Mignola vibe, that I really enjoy

When we last saw our hero Norgal and his undead, disembodied, witch-head Agatha, they were setting sail for a far off land, with his new comrade in arms Zhannia, a boat he’d just purchased, and a crew he hired.

Turns out, it’s not going so great for him at sea:

This is why you always pay them when you get to your deadly island with the evil tower.

Still, it could be worse. Your undead witch could do something like, freak out during the battle and release her spells causing a huge amount of death and destruction, and maroon you on a deadly island.

So they’re still the same delightful odd couple we’ve come to know and love.

I’m not giving away any plot points here, but’s lets just say that there’s a bit of a trial coming up, and if you’ve seen the recent Dredd movie, or perhaps The Raid, you’ll see kind of where this is going:

You can expect a slow winnowing of the characters until only the strong survive…except for the comic relief characters, who are fantastic in only the way a toddler can be.

Still, this is only chapter one, of what I’ll imagine will be a long haul, so if you like magic, swords, magic-swords, automatons, decapitations, death-traps, mysteries, and tribesmen who believe in their own predestined powers despite all evidence to the contrary, pick this up and give it a whirl. You can jump in easily here at issue 5, with no need to read the first volume (but you should anyway because it’s awesome).

Long live Agatha. 9/10

This is not your standard super-hero fare, or a Conan knock off trying to be funny - this is a deep and layered world, filled with hilarious characters, a bearded ass-kicker, and his witch-head, which tries to ruin everything. Just pure fun.
Norgal and Agatha are back, and they're bringing the heat in a death tower adventure
The little villagers, trying to defeat the tower themselves? Great addition
The Artwork and the humor in these pages is what keeps me coming back.
It's too short? I was spoiled by reading volume 1 in full, so now I'm waiting for the next issue. I hate waiting.
