Batwoman #6 Review

Batwoman jumps to the future of Gotham where things are quite bleak.

Time to go back to the future with Kate Kane who is now Commander Kane and the only defense we have against the Batman uprising. At least that’s what I’m calling it. Peer into the future where Batman’s desire for justice and control are now very much a bad thing.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“OPEN FIRE” part one! Return to the brief flash of the future seen in BATWOMAN: REBIRTH and meet Commander Kane–a battle-hardened version of Batwoman! Hurting from battles unknown, she’s taken control of the deadly Colony and declared war on Gotham City! What could possibly cause Kate Kane to bring the battlefront to her home? Find out here!

Why does this matter?

Marguerite Bennett and James Tynion IV have written a great series so far, one that tied heavily into Batwoman’s past so why not jump to the future. This is a sci-fi story worth checking out, especially if you like elsewhere tales, as surprises unfold throughout this issue.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

A dramatic beat and then…

Give it up for artist Renato Arlem who draws quite a pretty futuristic Gotham. With colors by Adriano Lucas, Arlem does well to capture the tech, gadgetry and environments. I get a slight feel of Alex Maleev off the style that is capable of capturing high detail in buildings and vehicles. Maybe it’s the texture, or the attention to detail, but it looks gorgeous. On top of that, you gotta appreciate when the glass on a mask is visible and shines and Kate’s commander position is quite clear from her costume. In a cool double page layout fight scene, Arlem draws using speed lines in the background and good use of blur and blood splatter to show the reader Kate means business.

Storywise, this is one of those tales that name drops characters you know and love in a not so obvious way making the reader perk up their ears. Tynion IV and Bennett are doing a good job integrating characters you know and love so that you have to piece together what exactly happened to get to this future. There’s some tantalizing romantic and relationship surprises in store for readers too. The story leads to a cliffhanger that will make you want a whole lot more soon. Now, when do we get it?

Cue dramatic music!

It can’t be perfect can it?

This is a quick read that’s really just two scenes with a transition in between. Aside from teasing what is going on and revealing a relationship you didn’t see coming there isn’t a whole lot on this script. The art is nice, the tease is fun, but a tease still is a tease. Give us some more meat on these bones!

Is It Good?

An enjoyable issue that’s more tease than full course, but I’ll take it. The sci-fi future Gotham looks gorgeous and the drama is so rivetingly complex you’ll want second helpings.

Is it good?
A fun blast into the future is a great tale for those who like a tease.
If you like elseworlds tales give this a shot
Great environments and tech
Teases via name drops and scant details well
It's still just a tease
8.5
Great
