Spilling from Totally Awesome Hulk #22\ is the latest story arc of Weapon X, so if you want the full 411 go read that issue! If not, maybe enjoy the Weapon H extravaganza that has a Hulkorine (or is it a Wolverulk?) on the loose.

So what’s it about?

Why does this matter?

It’s too bad Wolverines don’t have four claws, because this cover is missing Warpath. Regardless, the team is pretty cool with Sabretooth, Old Man Logan, Lady Deathstrike and Domino filling it out nicely. If the story is anything like “Weapons of Mutant Destruction” this should be a ride worth taking for action aficionados.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Weapon X #7 Review
Hide your bad memories!

Marc Borstel and Ibraim Roberson draw this issue with Frank D’Armata on colors and the art can be awe inducing at times, particularly when Weapon H remembers the destruction he’s committed. Like some kind of Hiroshima fever dream, the destruction looks like bodies turned into cinders. This helps connect the reader to what this character is going through emotionally and also remind readers he’s done very bad things. Action wise, the art team does well to capture the feral nature of Sabertooth and the brutality of Logan. In one panel for example, Sabretooth watches in a kind of awe as Wolverine slashes robots into blue-screen-of-death-mode. Speaking of Logan, he looks appropriately older throughout. Domino has a cool look as well, but the real showstoppers are the backgrounds, which are rendered in high detail.

The story sets up the threats well. That’s threats, plural, as Weapon H is a threat to anyone around him and also the Weapon X bastards who created him and want him back. Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente establish Weapon H’s normalcy rather quickly in the early pages and intercut some horrific memories to give the reader a sense of his complexity. As the story progresses it’s clear our heroes want him dead, but there’s more to it than that. It’s the sort of drama that’ll be a wait and see situation to figure out how far the writers can carry out the complexity of the series.

The characters continue to be interesting and well written. The villainous scientist who created Weapon H, Doctor Alba, continues to be borderline psychotic and also mischievous. She’s the kind of character that’s hard to pin down and adds a bit of chaos to a story. Meanwhile, the heroes are well rendered, with Sabretooth and Logan’s relationship being a highlight, but don’t discount Domino who has a spark that gives the team a bit of humor and personality.

Weapon X #7 Review
Seriously dude, those aren’t healthy.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Speaking of characters, Lady Deathstrike and Warpath are background characters at best. Sure they both speak, but they don’t get as much time on the page as the others and almost don’t need to be on this team at all. It’s a reoccurring problem in team books to not give every character a moment to shine or at least something to do and that happens here.

Is It Good?

Weapon X #7 sets up the stakes for our heroes and the complexity of their situation well. Most readers will be in it for Sabretooth and Logan being on a team together, but make no mistake: Weapon H could be one of the more interesting new characters of 2017.

Weapon X #7
Is it good?
A strong first issue that sets up the villains (plural!) well.
A good setup of the villains and complexity of the Weapon H character
Love Logan interacting with Sabretooth
Art captures the characters and surroundings well
Do Warpath and Lady Deathstrike even need to be on this team?
