Spirits of Vengeance #1 Review

The original Ghost Rider plus an intriguing premise combine to make Spirits of Vengeance #1 one hell of a time.

Spirits of Vengeance #1 has been on my radar since it was first announced. I saw the cast of characters and had to rub my eyes, making sure that I wasn’t dreaming. Johnny Blaze is coming back? Ghost Rider is one of my favorite characters and I’m sorry, but Reyes is not Ghost Rider, he is Ghost Driver, and I despise the character. So right away, I was hooked and knew that I had to get my hands on this book.

What is the Spirits of Vengeance about?

How many times have you been in a bar and had an angel sit down beside you? Only to have the angel hand you a piece of silver and before you know it, burst into a ball of flame right before your eyes? Well it happens to Johnny Blaze. The angel’s final words instruct Johnny to take the silver to Hellstrom. Blaze scoops up the silver, pays off his tab to the shocked employees of the bar and leaves the establishment. Outside waiting for him is a pair cops, only they aren’t cops, they are demons. Unfortunately for these demons, they just crossed paths with the Ghost Rider.

So Dave, is it good?

Spirits of Vengeance #1 is a pleasant surprise for me. The plot is very vague at the moment. All we know is that there is a dead angel and this piece of silver is a wanted treasure. Blaze and Hellstrom team up and do some investigating in efforts to obtain information on the mysterious piece of silver. However, they learn nothing new on their journey.

The introduction of the characters stood out to me. The story moves along with ease and not once did it feel like the characters were forced into the book just for the sake of being there. Hellstrom is more of a well-dressed, Wall Street type devil than the hellraiser we have seen previously. Blaze is back in all his glory! I missed him so much, Marvel please don’t take him away again after this series. Even Blade sneaks into the story seamlessly and it is a great joy to see him grace the pages of a comic book again.

Victor Gishler accomplished something that very few have done. He has begun a story, keeping the soul of it hidden, yet somehow manages to keep my attention the entire time. There are some good one liners and I am eager to find out what is so special about the silver.

David Baldeon and Andres Mossa conjure up some great artwork. The action scenes are well done, but some of the character designs look a little odd, including a few facial expressions. The colors are bold, most notably the reds and oranges. The darker colors add to the supernatural feel.

I am a fan of the Spirits of Vengeance. The Ghost Rider I love is back and Gishler has done him justice so far, even though a lot hasn’t happened. I have never really followed Hellstrom, but I like what I see out of him so far and the return of Blade will make fans squeal with delight when they first seem him. If you’re a fan of just one of these characters then I highly recommend you checking Spirits of Vengeance out, you are in for a hell of a good time!
