“Flash War” is finally here and the opening is definitely interesting for sure, featuring some real small fun character moments and a lot of callbacks and setups. Joshua Williamson brings out a solid start to the arc and Howard Porter brings solid artwork for it too.

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“FLASH WAR” part one! Barry Allen and Wally West…at war?! The long-rising tension between mentor and former sidekick is brought to a head when the Renegades of the 25th century come to claim Iris West for the murder of Eobard Thawne…but that’s only the beginning of a plot that will change the future of The Flash forever! By the end, it will be Flash versus Flash in a mythology-shaking event!

Grant Morrison JLA!

Tell me about it!

Three characters are mentioned a lot in this issue after being teased partially back in the annual. The first is Bart Allen, grandson to Barry Allen, whose most known superhero name is Impulse. The second is Bart’s teacher and time travelling speedster Max Mercury with his costume that includes a very large collar. The third and final is Jesse Quick, daughter to Johnny Quick and user of an equation that gives her super speed. With how much they’re appearing it’s obvious that it’s only a matter of time before at least Bart returns and with Joshua Williamson teasing an upcoming Flash title it’s likely that we’ll be seeing them eventually.

The issue has a really nice start of Iris and Wallace working on fixing a bike that Iris owns while Barry and Wally are dealing with a tidal wave from destroying an area of coast before they arrive and there’s a section of small nice chat between the four of them.

The Renegades’ newest member, Golden Guardian’s, power is finally revealed and the fact that it’s a Sinestro Corps ring is pretty damned cool and so is the sequence of the fear manifestations of the Barry, Wally and Wallace’s respective Reverse Flashes appearing and fighting them. However the biggest moment comes at the end of the issue where Hunter Zolomon reintroduces himself to Wally and states it’s time for him to be a hero and save the missing Speedsters who are stuck in the speedforce like Wally was as well as two other character who you’ll have to read to find out who they are!

The Flash #47
Is it good?
A solid start to the event with great artwork!
Williamson sets up the conflict well.
Porters art is spectacular and his layouts are fantastic.
The teases of Bart, Max and Jesse make me hopeful for a return from them.
Some of the dialogue feels slightly off.
8.5
Great
