After a nine year break, Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba’s The Umbrella Academy is back in the form of The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion. So, is Hotel Oblivion worth checking into? Let’s find out.
This issue seems to take place not long after the events of The Umbrella Academy: Dallas. It covers a lot of ground as it introduces us to Hotel Oblivion as well as seeing what Space Boy, The Kraken, The Rumor, Vanya, and Number 5 are all up to. In fact, we see everyone except for The Seance. The issue is very busy as it has two main jobs: It has to tell us what the characters are up to, as well as set up the Hotel Oblivion part of the plot. Both of these jobs are handled admirably, with every part of the story leaving you with questions that you want answered.

So much of this issue is about giving you just enough to pique your interest without spending too much time in any one place. It does that job well, with the bulk of the time spent on to Hotel Oblivion. A lot of the book is broken up into one to two pages jumping from place to place and I really appreciate how this book does a lot in one to two pages. It tells more story than you would expect while leaving a lot to make you want to read the next issue. For me the most intriguing stuff other than Hotel Oblivion was our brief look at The Rumor.
Gabriel Ba’s art is perfectly suited to the world in which this story is set. The sense of style and aesthetics really gives you a fantastic feel of the settings. The main action sequence has a great sense of energy and movement, plus it is very clear considering the complete lack of dialogue. The colors from Nick Filardi do a great job of setting the tone of the scene. My biggest criticism is a small continuity error with The Rumor, but that’s just me being fussy. Lastly, I want to say that I love the way that the credits are presented as a menu, which is a clever way to get you into the feel of the book and gets you asking questions about Hotel Oblivion.
