The War Of The Realms #6 Review

The epic finish is here, but can it stick the epic landing?

In all good stories, the ending matters quite a bit. The journey is key, but if you don’t stick the landing it may leave a sour taste in the mouth of every reader. And so, today Marvel’s latest big event The War of the Realms comes to an end with issue #6. Oh god, do Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman stick the landing?!

So what’s it about?

Why does this matter?

If you’ve made it this far you have to read the finale, but if you haven’t read this series at all I’d wager reading the final issue is a must too. How else will you understand what is going on with the main character (in this case Thor) or what all your favorite heroes just went through?

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

This is very much a finale with titles and decrees. Via captions and dialogue Jason Aaron lays waste to any semblance of modesty be it the “Storm of Thors” or characters pronouncing they are the “Butcher of Thors!” It’s as if the characters in this story know someone is writing all this down for posterity. In fact, on the very second page we see Thor’s daughters reading the history we’re witnessing so I guess that might be why! With those big fancy titles comes big lasting moments. The issue has quite a few all of which are too spoilery for this review. Outside of the closure of the event, I will admit there’s really only one major event save for Aaron closing the door on the younger Thor finally getting what he’s always sought.

The issue also ends by giving us a bit of finality on specific characters. Odin, the Symbiote, and Daredevil are but a few that seem to get a gentle nudge in a new direction. That helps wrap up not only the war itself but characters who got the most focus during the event. Outside of Thor, Aaron may have given Captain Marvel the best line in this issue and the event itself though.

The art by Dauterman and color artist Matthew Wilson is once again without fail. The level of detail and expertness is so high I’d wager these folks are workaholics. Characters stand tall and fit the script pulling off an otherwise ridiculous dialogue if they weren’t gods about to fight for their lives. The use of blur continues to add a heightened sense of drama to scenes. More than once the visuals made me wonder if Marvel Studios could pull off another Thor movie using these issues as a script. Please?

It can’t be perfect, can it?

Thanks to the time travel element there never seem to be any doubt the Thors are in danger. Heroes tend to prevail anyway, but there’s a lack of immediate danger that the big climactic battle is missing. You’re kind of just waiting to see how it plays out.

The only other element that left me wanting was a big move by Thor involving a weapon. I say no more, but it’d be nice to get a bit more detail on how that actually worked.

Is it good?

It’s the big finish we all were hoping for as Aaron, Dauterman, and Wilson pull off the biggest Thor event ever. They not only deserve a standing ovation for the grandeur of this finale but deserve a very big mug of mead.
