Savage Avengers #3 Review

Creative violence you haven’t seen before.

Savage Avengers very much lives up to its name. As I said in my review of issue #2, “This is as savage as it comes delivering a level of violence you won’t want to miss.” Gerry Duggan and Michael Deodato Jr. are giving us ultra-violence via some of the most dangerous and violent heroes in the Marvel universe so sit back and enjoy the show.

So what’s it about?

Why does this matter?

Deodato Jr. is going all out with the art featuring rivers of blood and gore. You don’t normally see this in a superhero book, but given the fact that this team has Wolverine, Elektra, Punisher, Brother Voodoo, Venom, and Conan the Barbarian if it didn’t lean into the violence the readers themselves might riot.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

This issue opens with Punisher mercilessly murdering red clothed ninjas. Another Marvel hero pops up and more murdering commences. It’s a good gauge for the type of book you’re getting yourself into. As the issue progresses there’s more fighting and blood spurting to be had. With a series like this, it needs to amp things up much like the insane movie Crank! and it does that in spades. I don’t want to spoil everything, but I will say you’ve never quite seen Wolverine used as a weapon as you see in this issue.

One complaint I’ve had with this series so far is how it’s not quite a team book yet. The players aren’t all together after all. It appears Duggan and Deodato Jr. are closing in on that and it’s nice to see most of these characters battling in the same room together. Based on how the creators are using these characters I wager we’re in very good hands as it’s creative in its violence.

Deodato Jr., with color artist Frank Martin, keep your eyes on the good stuff. The opening scene cast in the cloudy haze is well lit with red as if the very air the characters are breathing is blood. There are some spectacular full-page spreads in this issue with great use of light and atmosphere to create the kind of action frenzy one would expect.

It can’t be perfect, can it?

There is quite a lot of violence in this issue, but the plot continues to move very slowly. We’re clearly halfway through a story arc that’s in no rush to get to the end. It’s the sort of comic where each issue is five minutes of progress which means no big answers, no real meat to the character dynamics, and not a lot of substance. It’s a bit mindless, but with the violence you’re getting that’s kind of the point.

Is it good?

It’s the kind of comic that wouldn’t make sense in a movie because it’s too badass for anyone to comprehend. Savage Avengers offers insanely cool unbridled violence for the heavy metal crowd.
