Justice League #33 Review

Every issue seems to ramp up faster and, dare I say it, more furious.

Justice League continues to be one of the most packed books on the stands. Every issue is filled to the brim with action, character beats, and at least one laugh. It’s good blockbuster style comic books and with “Justice/Doom War” in full swing it’s only going to get better.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“The Justice Doom War” part four! Apex Lex Luthor is in ascendance, and he’s taking out the remaining members of the Justice League in the present just as his Legion of Doom is beating down the time-traveling heroes in both the past and the future. Batman, Superman and the rest of our heroes may have just figured out how Kamandi’s timeline works when terrible Hypertime quakes rattle their existence, threatening to strand them far from their own time. Meanwhile, the Flash, Green Lantern and the Justice Society take another leap through time, heading for…ancient Atlantis?

Why does this matter?

This is the fourth part of the event which is a good place for the narrative to dig in its heals. We’re aware of all the players, where they are at, and the stakes in play. Now it’s time to fight!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

This is big-time fun, not unlike Saturday morning cartoons. We’re talking huge reveals, bringing in familiar faces to the battle to characters literally combining to power up. The realism handbook is thrown out here as we’ve gone full space-god in the story’s architecture and with a few of the characters in play. We knew this was coming for a while now considering Perpetua is this unknown godlike figure, and as far as the battle that takes place here, you will not be disappointed.

The mix of future and past stories help add further weight to the story, making this one of the biggest superhero stories in scope you may have ever read. At the same time, this issue does not forget the human struggle in play as Hawkgirl continues to deal with her anger over Martian Manhunter’s seeming demise. The tried and true team concept to be less selfish and work together is at play here and it’s pretty clear a Hail Mary pass is in the works. The incredible thing about that though is there are even more characters being pulled in here, making it tricky to conceive of what the end game looks like.

The art is by Bruno Redondo and Daniel Sampere (with colors by Redondo, Juan Albarran, and Hi-Fi), and it works well to keep the energy up and the space fighting scenes clear as day. The style is more akin to conventional superhero storytelling (detailed physics, speed lines whipping maces around, etc.) and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. There are a few (yes more than one) panels with multiple characters serving as a big reveal that work well due to the attention to detail in costumes, faces, and stature that also work very well.

It can’t be perfect, can it?

With three separate plots going forward you can’t give everything the attention it deserves, and the future timeline gets a bit of a drought here. Their timeline does get the final cliffhanger page, but it’s a bit of a surprise the Trinity doesn’t have much to do here.

Is it good?

Do you like big storytelling, fun twists, and plenty of action? Give “Justice/Doom War” a look for its fun take on big action storytelling. Every issue seems to ramp up faster and, dare I say it, more furious.

Continues to expertly jump from one plot to the other well
Huge in scope while reminding us there are real personalities in danger here
Solid superhero art stylings
The Trinity are limited in this one
